Toowoomba

Toowoomba is
the largest inland city in Queensland. It was named by early
explorer Thomas Drayton around the 1840s supposedly based
on an Aboriginal expression describing the swamp or a small
native melon but this has not been verified. Its population
at the 2006 Census was 95,265. Its biggest tourist draw
card since the middle of the last century has been the annual
Carnival Of Flowers in September. On the outskirts of Toowoomba
are the airport, Clifford Park Racecourse, home of the Weetwood
Handicap, and the show ground, venue for the Royal Toowoomba
Show each March.
