Birdsville
- accommodation, restaurants, things to do
Birdsville
in Queensland was originally known as Diamantina Crossing
but changed to Birdsville in 1885. It was originally set
up as a 'tariff wall' between Queensland and South Australia.
Tolls which had provided the town's income, ceased in 1901
with the formation of the Federation and the town declined.
The Birdsville Track was originally developed in the late
19th century as one of Australia's first major cattle routes.
Birdsville is best known by tourists these days for the
annual race meeting, The Birdsville Cup held every September.
